Compress a video for Instagram
Instagram re-encodes everything you upload and displays Reels and Stories at up to 1080 pixels wide, so uploading a huge 4K file mostly just wastes data and time — and big files are more likely to stall on mobile. Converting to 1080p H.264 MP4 at a sensible size gives Instagram a clean source to work from.

Compress for Instagram (1080p) →How to do it
- Open the compressor with 1080p resolution and a 100 MB target (the button below sets both).
- Load your video. 4K phone footage and camera MOV files are fine.
- Trim it to your Reel or Story length.
- Compress and download the MP4.
- Upload it in the Instagram app as usual.
Tips
- Don't go too small: Instagram compresses again, so starting from a low-bitrate file compounds the loss. 1080p at 50–100 MB for a minute is plenty.
- This tool keeps your aspect ratio — it doesn't crop to 9:16, so frame vertically when recording.
- Shorter Stories segments can use a lower target, e.g. 25 MB.
FAQ
Does compressing first improve Instagram quality?
It mainly makes uploads faster and more reliable. Quality is set largely by Instagram's own encoding; a clean 1080p source avoids extra damage from downscaling on their side.
Will it crop my video to 9:16?
No. Resolution scaling keeps the original aspect ratio. Crop in your editor or the Instagram app.
Is my video uploaded to your server?
No — it's compressed on your device. It's only uploaded when you post it to Instagram yourself.
